There are several reasons why dogs may exhibit the behavior of eating their own poop. Understanding the reason why they eat poop is important to prevent it from becoming a lifelong habit. With lot of patience and providing proper training and nutrition, ensure the puppy's health and well-being.
Puppy Curiosity
One reason why puppy eat their poop could be due to their natural curiosity and exploration of their surroundings. Puppies are known to explore the world through their mouths, and this includes investigating their own waste.
Nutritional Deficiencies
Another reason could be related to their diet. If a puppy is not receiving enough nutrients or is not digesting their food properly, they may attempt to re-consume their waste in order to extract any remaining nutrients.
Puppies Eat Poops To Copy Their Moms
Before pups are weaned, it's normal for the mother dog to eat the stool her pups. Puppies learn to be dogs by imitating their mother's actions, so it's not uncommon for them to try eating their own feces or that of their littermates. This conduct can sometimes be thwarted by getting any stool the pups produce before they get the opportunity to nibble on it.
Boredom and Stress
Some puppies may engage in coprophagia as a result of stress, boredom, or anxiety. It is important to address this behavior promptly. Puppies with inconsistent socialization and action can foster many bad habits in an effort to entertain themselves or feel more in charge of their environment. Though biting on crates and furniture is more normal, a few little dogs might eat their poop.
Insufficient Food
Eating stool may indicate a dog is hungry and seeking more calories. Puppies should be fed a diet designed for their needs. Puppy tend to eat poo at times when they’re most hungry. Give them enough to eat and have a regular feeding routine. Give them a good quality food that’s likely to keep them feeling full.
Avoiding Punishment
Pups who perceive yelling and punishment as something to stay away from may eat poop to conceal the fact that they have pooped where they shouldn't while being house-trained.
Punishment tactics should never be used to help with house-training or stool-eating, instead focus on praising good behaviors such as popping outside and potty outside.
