Ten Ways to Help your Puppy Survives Parvovirus

Help your puppy survive parvo, with the right care and dedication. Strain of parvo has the virulent type that leaves no survivors and also has a weaker strain that your puppy may have a good chance of surviving. Here are some guides to take care for your sick puppy.
1. Call your Veterinarian
Parvovirus is a call for an emergency so contact your vet immediately and get the puppy treated as soon as possible. The vet usually gives some shots or antibiotics for the infection to calm your pooch intestinal spasms. Follow the veterinarian’s instructions exactly.
2. Give a Medication for Diarrhea
When your puppy has parvo, it causes extreme inflammation to the lining of the intestines that cause bleeding and hemorrhage that can cause death. Give half teaspoon of Pepto Bismol every other hour to keep your puppy stomach coated this will help soothe the irritation and bleeding. You can also use Imodium (loperamide) an alterrnative for dog stomach issues this medication that can help with diarrhea. The Imodium dosage for dogs is 2 milligrams per 40 pounds of body weight, 2-3 times per day for the tablet form.
3. Give Rehydration Drinks or a Homemade Substitute
Doing this to keep the puppy from getting dehydrated. Dehydration is what kills the dog. You must get fluids and electrolytes into their system. You will have to squirt it in with a syringe, dump it in with a teaspoon, or try some other method. Whatever you do, just get liquids into them. Give at least two to three tablespoons every half hour or so. Give a little more or less than this, according to the size of the dog. Don’t worry if they throw up, some of it will at least go down their stomach. Wait a while and give them some more.
4. Give Ice Cubes
Your dog will likely vomit when having a parvo. Put ice cube in their mouth and let them lick and swallow the cold water, your puppy will usually like it. It helps with the nausea and bellyache.
5. Give Metoclopramide Pills
Give Metoclopramide pills as per the vet's instructions. These will help calm down your puppy's nausea, intestinal spasms, and distress. It will help the puppy keep fluids down and get some rest. Metoclopramide can be known as Reglan pills as brand name while other veterinarian may also suggest different brand names.
6. Clean your puppy
You have to keep your puppy clean every now and then. Wipe with warm damp cloths when they vomit or poops to stop them getting messy.

7. Let Them Rest
Provide a quiet and peaceful area to let your puppy rest. Be sure to keep them comfortable, covered them up and keep them warm. This will help them heal.
8. Be Gentle
Let your puppy know that you love him. Offer him a loving and petting gesture, speak smoothly. This will help your puppy heal faster.
9. Ease the Pup Back into Eating and Drinking
When you see your puppy starts getting better, feed him a small amount of chicken broth and meat. Continue on giving him the Pedialyte until he starts to drink water on his own again. The sooner you re -introduce him to eating food, the sooner he gets feeling better.
If the puppy starts getting up, eating and drinking on their own, give them just a small portion to start with. Start by giving them boiled chicken meat and its broth. Then gradually increasing it by mixing some healthy ingredient like carrots, potato, cooked rice and then small amounts of wet dog food. Keep doing it until they get their digestive tracts working right again and you see some good signs that they are getting better. It won’t take long before you see your dog bounce back from near deathbed to a happy puppy again.
10. Disinfect and Vaccinate
Keep in mind that the Parvovirus lives in soil, objects and surfaces where an infected animal has been. Thoroughly disinfect your whole house and make sure to let your puppy complete his vaccinations. If you are to bring other new puppies, be sure to get them vaccinated as well before you bring them home.
