Having a dog is a wonderful experience to any home, but whether you're an experienced pet owner or a first-time adopter, your top priority is to keep your pet’s health, safety and happiness. Here are some simple tips for all dog owners in taking care of your dog.
1. Provide your dog a safe and clean environment
Keep dangerous things or hazardous chemical away from your dog. Keep electric wires or socket protected for your dog safety. Make a clean designated area for your dog. Always clean the pee and poop area to maintain cleanliness and avoid unnecessary spread of illnesses for your dog.
2. Keep fresh water available
Always provide you’re a dog a clean and fresh water. Keep your dog hydrated always to avoid conflict on his health.
3. Feed a quality diet
Follow standard servings of foods recommended by your veterinarian. Avoid giving your dog’s table scraps. Provide your dog the nutritional needs that are based on their size, age, breed and active lifestyle. Obesity on dogs have adverse effect on their health. They may develop heart complications and knee problems.
4. Visit your veterinarian
Your dog needs to complete vaccination schedules, deworming, heartworm and anti- flea control. Keep a copy of your dog vaccination records and set a reminder. Doing these things for your will keep him away from unwanted illnesses. If you suspect your dog being ill, never give them medication that has not been prescribe by your veterinarian. Bring your dog to the veterinary clinic as soon as possible.
5. Walk your dog daily
Let your dog have his daily exercise by bringing him to walk around the village or let him play in a dog park. It will keep him fit and happy. This activity will also keep him familiarized and socialized with other dogs. Engage for a playtime, it is an essential part of building and keep the bond stronger between you and your pet. Put your dog on a leash when you are outside. You can also set him free when you are in a secured, fenced-in area.
6. Teach your dogs some commands
Having a quality time with your dog makes you know him better and understand his behavior. Training your dog is a responsibility that a canine pet parent should do at an early age or if you have decided to adopt a shelter dog it’s never too late to teach him some simple commands too like sit, stay and lay down. Obedience training will not only develop your dog good manners, but also helps your dog to be healthy and safe under different circumstances.
7. Birth control
If you are not planning to breed your dog and create litter, spay or neutering has health advantages to you dog. These practices can also prevent unwanted pregnancy and lower the count of shelter dogs.
8. Brush your dog’s teeth
Some dogs are prone gum diseases, which can lead to infections and have serious implications to their health. Practice dental care on your dog by brushing his teeth on regular basis using pet toothpaste at least three times a week. Don’t use human toothpaste for it may have ingredients that are dangerous to your dog.
9. Groom your dog
Long hair or double coated dogs needs regular brushing and trimming of their hair to avoid matting and develop irritation or skin disease. Dog nails grows too and makes your dog uncomfortable walking. Cut their nails carefully. Long nail is susceptible from breakage and cause them pain. Clean their ears as well using ear cleaner that is labeled for them. Regular ear cleaning will prevent dirt and debris that may lead to serious ear infections.
