Here's how to introduce a new puppy to an older dog, as well as advice on how to create a fun environment for both dogs and health concerns to keep them safe.
Prepare a Meet Up Place
It is crucial to choose the right time and place for the introduction. This should be a neutral location where your older dogs feel comfortable. It is essential to supervise the initial interactions closely to ensure safety and prevent any potential conflicts. An outdoor space is a decent spot for a first introduction, however in the event that your new puppy isn't completely vaccinated, this meet-and-greet should occur in your own backyard. In addition, you should designate a separate areas in your home where each dog can retreat to feel secure whenever they require a break.
Gradual Introductions is the Key
Have the pup's toys, blanket, and crate in the house for two or three weeks before you bring them home. This gives your older dog a chance to sniff out the new smell and be familiar. Then start allowing short supervised periods of interaction, gradually increasing the duration as the dogs become more comfortable with each other.
Introducing the dogs
When the day of bringing the puppy home arrives. Let the puppy sniff around the house on their own, while your other dog is on leash on the other room. Keep your puppy inside a crate when you bring your older dog inside. Don't hold the puppy in your arms when you introduce them, to avoid the older dog feeling replaced. Pet your older dog on a high ground or on a sofa where a puppy can't jump. Let the puppy sit below, while you pet your older dog, to avoid jealousy.
Pay Attention to Body Language
When introducing older dogs to each other. Pay attention to raised fur, prolonged stares, growling or snarling, and hunched back. End the encounter when this happen and supervise the dogs until they become comfortable. Try to reintroduce them later.
Making the Puppy a Reward
Give the older dog lots of treats and love every time you call the puppy. The older dog will learn to associate the new puppy with good things, like love, attention, and treats, over time. Providing each dog their own space and personal attention is important to avoid jealousy. Additionally, providing enough toys, treats, and positive reinforcement for good behavior helps create a positive association between the dogs.
Patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement are essential throughout the process to foster a harmonious relationship between the new puppy and older dogs. Remember, every dog is different, and the introduction process may take time, so be patient and allow them to adjust at their own pace.
